From City Hall to the ballroom, WISH-NY and the Young Women of Color HIV/AIDS Coalition (YWCHAC) have had a busy season. As the summer wound down, they were leading voices among the advocates applauding the recent announcement from Mayor Bloomberg that his new Young Men’s Initiative to aid young Black and Latino men will include a mandate for a semester of sex education in New York City schools.
But as longtime advocates of comprehensive, continuous sex ed, they didn’t stop there.
In a column prominently featured on TheBody.com, WISH founder Tracie M. Gardner, and Kymsha Henry, YWCHAC’s co-director, revisited the history of similar policies, especially in the context of HIV infection rates, and urged city officials to consult with practitioners and community groups in order to properly implement the new mandate.
When our children’s lives hang in the balance, they stressed, change is born not in mandates but in follow-through.
